BRIEF:

Design a device/product-system that improves comfort + performance duringlong-duration confinement (ISS-like), addressing daily life under constraints (limited privacy, sensory monotony, restricted space, routine fatigue).

The device needs to clearly improve comfort, usability, or psychological balance in confined conditions.

Those pieces would showcase weaving technique by the weaving artist. It was required the use of metal tube as structure. We started our research framing the problem around clothes hygiene in the ISS. In space, water is a scarce resource and clothes are considered disposable items.

Then, we analyzed the regular routine of astronauts regarding their clothes. We concluded that the best system to extend the life of clothes in the ISS is not just deep cleaning, but also an on-demand refreshening option to increase astronauts' psychological comfort.
Collection of images of curved, organic-shaped couches and chairs creating a moodboard.
Based on current research being carried out by the Chinese space agency, we developed a systematic diagram of how our conceptual clothes-cleaning machine can work in two modules: one for cleaning (ideal for really dirty clothes) and one for refreshening (ideal to quickly provide the comfort-feeling of fresh clothes).
We also designed a special frame to assist with the challenge of keeping clothes in the ideal position in zero gravity.
And to complete the product system, we designed dirty-clothes bags and clean-clothes clutches for personal use.

This project was part of my master studies at Politecnico di Milano.

In a group of 5 students, we designed a product system focused on clothes hygiene for astronauts the ISS.

The project considers aspects of confinement, comfort, sensorial hunger, and directly addresses the problem of clothes being treated as disposable items and simply thrown to burn in the atmosphere.

The product system is composed of 1) a dual-section machine that uses atomized water + ozone in the cleaning module and UVC + microwave + scented spray in the refreshening module, 2) a special frame to keep t-shirts, pants, socks and underwear in ideal position for cleaning, and 3) personal-use storage for dirty and clean clothes.
